Alpha Legislative Night in Annapolis (February 23, 2009)

Nearly 100 brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. gathered in Annapolis on Monday, February 23 for the seventh Annual Legislative Night. Sponsored by the Baltimore Delegate Keith Haynes (a member of the Delta Lambda Chapter) the fraternity descends on the State Capital each year.

During the evening, which began with a plenteous reception in the Lowe House Office building, several members of the Maryland Legislature joined the gathering and shared greetings with the impressive group of Black men. House Speaker Michael Busch, House Speaker Pro Tem Adrianne Jones, Senator Delores Kelley, Delegate Ruth Kirk, and other representatives from Maryland's Eastern Shore, Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, Western and Southern Maryland acknowledged the commendable work of Alpha Phi Alpha over its 102 year history.

Additionally, Delta Lambda Chapter was joined during the evening by members of chapters in the Washington, D.C. area, Baltimore, Annapolis and Harford County. Each chapter leader shared greetings during a brief program that paid homage to the work of alpha men in government and politics. Delta Lambda president R. Anthony Mills initiated official greetings and introduced Eastern Region vice president Dennis Kemp.

Among the array of Alpha men were leaders in education, government, medicine, sports, science, communications and technology. These distinguished brothers are a shining example for a group of 20 young students also in attendance. Delta Lambda sponsor a Beautillion program each year, which mentors high school senior males over an eight month period in preparation for their transition into college. The 2009 Beautillion class enjoyed the reception, had the opportunity to meet elected officials and share their own personal collegiate aspirations.

At the conclusion of the reception, the large group walked to the State House in time to be seated in the galleries of both the House and Senate chambers before the evening legislative sessions commenced. During the sessions, the Fraternity was recognized, applauded by the legislators and commended for its ongoing work in the community and its worth to the nation.

While the organization visits Annapolis collectively once a year, many Alpha members are actively involved and committed to the legislative process, helping to shape policy and laws to benefit others. Their works reflects the Alpha motto, "...Servants of All..."
